While digging through one of my record collecting groups (as part of my work on the Endless Exotica archive project), I came across an intriguing post featuring what appears to be a home recording disc from 1951, branded “ToneX.” Despite searching online, I’ve turned up nothing about these ToneX home recording discs.
The label design was simple and striking enough to warrant preservation, so I created a new digital version for fellow archivists researching this vintage technology.
Home recording & vinyl-recording-making equipment for non-professionals was, apparently, somewhat common in the 1950s, though the specifics lie beyond my expertise.
If anyone has insights into ToneX or similar record-making systems from this era, I’d love to hear about them.
