Here’s a beautiful, recent find of a vintage postcard depicting Lucy the Elephant standing in front of the Elephant Hotel) in Margate City, New Jersey.
Lucy the Elephant was a large, six-story, elephant-shaped wooden building with a red and yellow saddle and a howdah (pavilion) on its back.
The bottom caption reads, “The only elephant in the world you can go through and come out alive.”
Lucy still stands today as a historic landmark that you can tour. The @lucytheelephant account on Instagram has a post with a similar postcard and claims it to be “pre-1929.” That account also describes the current Lucy the Elephant as “Built in 1881, Lucy is a 65ft tall, elephant-shaped building. A National Historic Landmark & is known as America’s Oldest & Best Roadside Attraction! 9200 Atlantic Avenue, Margate City, New Jersey 08402”
