In celebration of National Typewriter Day and in anticipation for this weekend’s QWERTY! Typewriter Festival at The International Printing Museum (in Torrance, CA), I’ve created a little online tool to let typewriter users encode and decode secret messages with characters available on most vintage machines.
The TYPIST’S CIPHER is an interactive encoding tool where you flip key switches to generate a substitution cipher unique to your message. As you enter your text you’ll see it encode in real time. Or, you can print a KEY CARD to encode messages directly on your typewriter.
Only recipients that have both your encoded message and the proper key can decipher your text.
