Machine Description

The Coronet Super 12 is one of Smith Corona’s later portable electrics, produced through the early-to-mid 1970s. The “12” refers to its 12-inch carriage, which gives you a wider writing field than the standard portables of the era. It runs on the familiar snap-in cartridge ribbon system Smith Corona introduced in the late 1960s, which makes ribbon changes fast and clean but limits you to the single, black typing color. Compatible cartridges are still in production today, so keeping this machine running is not a parts hunt.

The type action is light and consistent. These machines were sold as home and office portables, and the key feel reflects that, smooth without much resistance. Not a machine for writers who want tactile feedback, but very usable for long sessions.

By 1974, Smith Corona was facing serious pressure from electronic word processors and cheaper imports. The Super 12 is a product of that squeeze, well-built but designed with cost in mind. It does what it was made to do without much fuss.

A few things to know if you own one:

  • Cartridge ribbons make ribbon changes clean & convenient, but note that these machines do not use standard typewriter ribbons.
  • The motor brushes wear over time. If the machine hesitates or cuts out, worn brushes are the first thing to check.
  • Check the on/off switch contact. Corrosion there is common and causes intermittent power issues that look like motor failure.

Important Note: when wishing to eject the ribbon cartridge – push the lever IN (not down) to avoid damage to the machine.
