Machine Description
The Remington 611 is a rebranded typewriter manufactured by the Japanese company Brother Industries. It is favored by collectors for its all-metal construction, professional feel, and attractive color scheme.
The typing action on the 611 is quick, responsive, and enjoyable. To me, this model marries the best of electric & manual operation: especially with the manual carriage return which is smoother & more enjoyable than a powered “return” key.
The Brother Connection
During the 1960s and 1970s, as traditional American typewriter manufacturers struggled to compete with cheaper international production, companies like Remington Rand stopped making their own compact portable machines. Instead, they partnered with Brother, which was a dominant industry force.
The Remington 611 is a variant of the Brother JP-4 machine. It is an electric “pro-sumer” model featuring a 12-inch carriage, all-metal construction, and a manual carriage return lever (which I greatly prefer over the unreliable & carriage-slamming “Power Returns” on other electric models.
Variants: this machine shares internal mechanics and body styles with other Brother-produced units of the era, such as the Montgomery Ward Signature 812D and the Remington 612.
SIZE NOTE: the height listed above is for the main machine body & does not include the carriage return arm. With the arm extended, the height is about 180mm.
Serial Number Location:
Stamped into a metal label on the underside (bottom) of the typewriter.
