Two descents into subterranean terror.
In 2005, spelunking suddenly became one of cinema's least appealing hobbies thanks to The Cave and The Descent. Both films trap groups of explorers deep beneath the Earth's surface, where claustrophobic tunnels, unseen creatures, and dwindling hope turn every wrong turn into a fight for survival. The Cave embraces creature-feature thrills with action-heavy set pieces, while The Descent digs into psychological horror, relentless tension, and some of the decade's most nerve-shredding scares. They start in remarkably similar places, but only one found its way onto many horror fans' all-time favorites list.
The Cave
A team of American cave divers and European scientists descend into a newly discovered underwater cave system beneath a ruined abbey in Romania's Carpathian Mountains, believing it holds an untouched ecosystem. A collapse seals their only way out, and as they search deeper for another exit, they find the caverns are home to a colony of flying, parasitic predators that begin hunting the group one by one.

The Descent

When an unmapped passage collapses behind them, the group is trapped deep underground, and their hunt for another way out leads them into the territory of blind, flesh-eating humanoid creatures, forcing long-buried tensions among the women to the surface as they fight to survive both the predators and each other.
