Earth abandoned. Sci-fi duplicated.
In 2013, Hollywood looked to a future where Earth was less a home than a haunting reminder of what humanity had lost. Oblivion and After Earth both follow protagonists navigating an abandoned, hostile planet while uncovering truths that reshape their understanding of their mission. But while Oblivion wraps its mystery in sleek visuals, existential sci-fi, and big ideas, After Earth opts for a father-son survival adventure that never quite reaches the same heights. They may share a remarkably similar premise, but one became a stylish sci-fi favorite, while the other serves as a reminder that a great concept only gets you so far.
Oblivion
In 2077, drone repairman Jack Harper is one of the last humans stationed on an Earth devastated decades earlier by war with an alien race known as the Scavs. With his mission nearly complete, Jack's understanding of his own past — and of the planet itself — is upended when he rescues a mysterious woman from a downed spacecraft, setting off a chain of events that forces him to question everything he's been told.
