Machine Description

The Smith-Corona Coronamatic 2500, made from the late 70s to early 80s, was a popular electric typewriter as considered a deluxe model with a modern (for its era) look.

This electric machine uses a Coronamatic cartridge ribbon system, has a powered carriage return, and a somewhat unique “paper injector” feature.

Considered a solid, well-built machine, representing the later generation of electric typebars before electronic models dominated, but the niche ribbon cartridges limit its current market appeal.

For its time, it was a feature-rich, consumer-friendly electric typewriter from the tail end of the mechanical era. It offered a decent amount of typing convenience and brought a bit of style – albeit that of a 1980s wood-paneled station wagon.

Most notably, for me, is the inclusion of a security background character (░) that provided some protection against future modification when typing checks (or other sensitive details).

When powered on, the machine has a noticeable (but not bothersome) motor home and a nicely warm amber light as a power indicator.

Important Note: when wishing to eject the ribbon cartridge – push the lever IN (not down) to avoid damage to the machine.

Replacement ribbon cartridges are still available. Search for “Smith Corona 17657 Ribbon Cartridge”
