Driving all night in my friend Ryan’s old, convertible Fiat. Los Altos > Palo Alto > Mountain View > over the mountain to Half Moon Bay. Too dark & cold to enjoy beach, continue driving. South, down the coast. Passed through an odd-smelling fog....
